THIS WORK SEEMS TRIVIAL. IT LACKS ORIGINALITY WHEN COMPARED TO PICASSO\u2019S MASTERPIECES. THIS WORK IS LIKE AN ATTEMPT AT A PSYCHOLOGICAL SELF-PORTRAIT BY THE ARTIST. ONE CAN SEE THE DARK SIDE OF THE TOXIC MAN IN IT. HE IS ALONE, ISOLATED. IN THE DARKNESS, A CLOSE-UP FILLS THE ENTIRE PICTURAL SPACE. HIS HEAD APPEARS DISPROPORTIONATE TO HIS NECK. ONE SEES AN EGO ON THE SAME SCALE. A SUCCESSION OF TOUCHES, OF BRUSHSTROKES OVERLOADED WITH PAINT, CONSTRUCT THIS FACE THAT IS LOST IN ITS MATERIALITY. IT IS IMPRINTED WITH A SENSE OF URGENCY. THE MAN DISSOLVES INTO HIS OWN IMAGE. WE ARE WITNESSES TO A NON-IDEALIZED REPRESENTATION BY THE GREAT MASTER. A DICHOTOMIC DEPICTION THAT IS BOTH VIOLENT AND ALMOST CHILD-LIKE. A DUAL GAZE STRUCTURES THE FACE; ONE EYE IS OPEN, THE OTHER IS BLACK, AS IF GOUGED OUT BY DORA MAAR IN ONE OF THE DRAWINGS FROM HER PRIVATE COLLECTION.
