Venice Biennale 2026, European Cultural Center, Palazzo Mora,
Personal Structures, We Are Inconsolable
May 9 through November 22, 2026
Curator: Francesca Carol Rolla
Director of the European Cultural Center: Sara Danieli

ORLAN is inconsolable in the face of the proliferation of wars, the rise of extreme ideologies—far-right movements, new forms of totalitarianism, masculinism, sexism, racism, homophobia…—and the strong resurgence of religious dogmas. The logic of domination is intensifying: the law of the strongest prevails, dictated by power, violence, and money.
ORLAN believes that artists have a responsibility—that they must react and take a stand: Here, she shouts, screams, and cries—in active and political anger. This rage becomes artistic material, a driving force for creation, and a gesture of resistance.
ORLAN creates manifesto self-portraits by blending traditional techniques with new technologies, including generative artificial intelligence. Her interventions in painting are sometimes visible, highly visible, barely visible, invisible, or simply implied. By scrutinizing the technique, the viewer is confronted with the conflicts that exist within both the works and the world. The spectator is no longer merely an “eye”; they move beyond passivity in the face of contemporary belligerence and recognize the urgency of both individual and collective responsibility.
The Centre Pompidou—
National Museum of Modern Art—announces the seven works from its collection that have changed the world
Marcel Duchamp, “Fountain”; Kasimir Malevich, “Black Square on a White Background”; Yves Klein, “Ant 82, Anthropometry of the Blue Period”; Niki de Saint Phalle, “Tir”; Piero Manzoni, “Merda d’artista”; Valie Export, “Aktionshose: Genitalpanik,” ORLAN, “The Artist’s Kiss.”
