ORLAN is inconsolable faced with the proliferation of wars, the rise of extreme ideologies — far-right movements, renewed forms of totalitarianism, masculinism, sexism, racism, homophobia… — and the strong comeback of religious dogmas. Logics of domination are intensifying: the law of the strongest prevails, dictated by power, violence, and money.
ORLAN believes that artists have a responsibility, that they must react and take a stand: Here, she shouts, screams, cries — in active and political anger. This rage becomes artistic material, a driving force for creation, a gesture of resistance.
ORLAN creates manifesto self-portraits by hybridizing traditional techniques and new technologies, including generative artificial intelligence. Her interventions in painting are sometimes visible, highly visible, barely visible, invisible, or simply suggested. By scrutinizing the technique, the viewer is confronted with the conflicts that inhabit both the works and the world. The spectator is no longer just an “eye”; they move beyond passivity in the face of contemporary belligerence and recognize the urgency of both individual and collective responsibility.
