Bumpload – memento mori is a video made in 2013 that responds to the idea that art can be therapeutic.

ORLAN had scans taken of her skull at the Turin Clinic in Paris, in order to create works in collaboration with the Sismos group of designers. Using sismo software, ORLAN was able to create a 3D printing sculpture of her skull, and thanks to these scans, her skull is not generic, but a skull with identity.

In this manifesto, ORLAN denounces racism.

To do this, she chose to paint her self-portrait as a skinned woman, so that no one could attribute a particular skin color to her. No photographs of her were used in its production. A machine produced it, on the basis of orders it gave.

ORLAN created MesuRAGE for the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh in 2012 wearing a knee brace and taking anti-inflammatory medication for a knee injury, despite her doctor’s contraindication. For the occasion, ORLAN presented a major retrospective of MesuRAGE by Eric Shiner. 

She used her body to measure the entire façade of the museum, despite the pain.

ORLAN hybridizes flags in her 2011 video ASILE/EXIL. ORLAN has worked with undocumented migrants and asylum seekers. First in Belgium at La Cambre with artist Johan Muyle and his students, then in Marseille. The artist asked immigrants living around the Mediterranean and in Marseilles to recount, on camera, their crossing, their journey and their relationship with their country of origin.

In the preface to Tiers-instruit, entitled “Laïcité”, Michel Serres describes the Harlequin who, having gradually removed all his layers of patchwork clothing during a round-the-world tour, presents a skin that is also in patchwork form. ORLAN was greatly inspired by this book, which she will read during the Biopsie performance.

The 7th surgical operation-performance, known as Omniprésence, took place on November 21 1993 in New York in collaboration with the Sandra Gering Gallery. 

During this operation, ORLAN was operated on by the feminist surgeon Dr. Marjorie Kramer and costumed by designer Lan Vu and her team. The photographers were Robert Puglisi and Vladimir Sichov for Sipa-Press (photos copyright-free).

During this operation, ORLAN was operated on by Dr. Chérif Kamel Zahar and costumed by designer Franck Sorbier. During the performance, the artist read “Le Tiers Instruit” by Michel Serres.

The 4th operation-surgical-performance, known as Operation Success or the ultimate masterpiece, took place on December 08 1990 in Paris. 

During this operation, ORLAN was operated on by Dr. Bernard Cornette de Saint-Cyr and costumed by designer Paco Rabanne.

During the performance, the artist read “La Robe” by Eugénie Lemoine-Luccioni and Lacan. The photographer was Alain Dohmé for Pipa-Press. ORLAN invites dancer Jimmy Blanche to strip, dance and sing during the operation.

Sainte-ORLAN et les vieillards is a video and photographic series created in 1983. This work is a reference to Susanna and the Elders, but also to Rembrandt’s Anatomy Lesson. At the time, ORLAN was running an art-therapy workshop at the Ivry-sur-Seine hospital, and invited the elderly participants to appear in the work.
